A Rooftop Celebration of Fiddler on the Roof

Historian Offers Multimedia Event on the Roof (No Kidding!)
of the Sutton Place Synagogue

(New York City: July 9, 2014) – A lecture on the roof . . . sounds crazy, no? Well, on Wednesday, July 16th, 2014 at The Sutton Place Synagogue (225 East 51st Street, NYC) at 7:30 PM, theatre and film historian John Kenrick will offer a multimedia celebration of Fiddler on the Roof, which debuted on Broadway 50 years ago. Held in the synagogue’s rooftop playground, this talk will use rare photos and video clips to tell the story of how Fiddler made it to Broadway, and how it has remained a worldwide audience favorite for half a century. Admission is $15 for non-members, and includes a dessert buffet. In case of extreme weather, this event will move indoors. Seating is limited, so reservations are suggested, and can be made by calling 212-593-3300.

This marks the eighth year of Kenrick’s rooftop Theatre Chat series at the Sutton Place Synagogue, which has allowed hundreds to relive a time when New York’s theatre-goers spent their summer evenings enjoying performances in rooftop theatres. Kenrick says, “When the folks at Sutton Place first suggested holding these summertime talks on the roof, I was a bit skeptical – but the breathtaking setting makes this an unforgettable way to celebrate our city’s rich theatrical history.”

Currently teaching at NYU Steinhardt and the New School University, author and lecturer John Kenrick combines a passion for entertainment history with the practical know-how earned working on stage productions at every level from amateur to Broadway. He pulls back the curtain and introduces audiences and students to the fascinating people behind show business legends. He has made appearances on PBS, BBC TV and radio, Biography Channel and National Public Radio. One of his students recently evaluated his course by writing, “He didn’t just make me laugh – he made me care.”
